Keeping up with the Joneses in McMansions: Changes in Wealth Inequality between College and High-School Graduates
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper analyzes the changes in wealth inequality between college graduates and high-school graduates between 1989 and 2007. The college/high-school net worth gap first narrowed from 1989 to 1995 but then increased thereafter. The wealth gap between the two groups reflects the earnings gap as the evolution in the wealth gap follows the changes in the college premium in income during the sample period. Many “stylized facts” about earnings inequality are also found in dynamics of wealth inequality ---within group inequality increased substantially, particularly among college graduates, and an increase in residual dispersion accounts for a considerable fraction in widening wealth inequality.

We derive an international asset pricing model that assumes investors have preferences of the type “keeping up with the Joneses.” In an international setting investors compare their current wealth with that of their peers who live in the same country. Investors value domestic assets because they are more highly correlated with the domestic benchmark. In equilibrium, this gives rise to a multifa...
متن کاملEstimating distributions of potential outcomes using local instrumental variables with an application to changes in college enrollment and wage inequality
This paper extends the method of local instrumental variables developed by Heckman and Vytlacil (1999, 2001, 2005) to the estimation of not only means, but also distributions of potential outcomes. The newly developed method is illustrated by applying it to changes in college enrollment and wage inequality using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth of 1979. Increases in college e...
متن کاملThe Determinants and Welfare Implications of US Workers’ Diverging Location Choices by Skill: 1980-2000
From 1980 to 2000, the rise in the U.S. college-high school graduate wage gap coincided with increased geographic sorting as college graduates concentrated in high wage, high rent cities. This paper estimates a structural spatial equilibrium model to determine causes and welfare consequences of this increased skill sorting. While local labor demand changes fundamentally caused the increased ski...
متن کاملThe Determinants and Welfare Implications of US Workers’ Diverging Location Choices by Skill: 1980-2000 JOB MARKET PAPER
From 1980 to 2000, the substantial rise in the U.S. college-high school graduate wage gap coincided with an increase in geographic sorting as college graduates increasingly concentrated in high wage, high rent metropolitan areas, relative to lower skill workers. The increase in wage inequality may not reflect a similar increase in well-being inequality because high and low skill workers increas...
